Cigar Room Walnut Cribbage Bowl

This masculine statement piece was hand turned on my lathe from a Grand Rapids MN area walnut tree. Contrasting the smooth finish is a bark inclusion on the outside with lighter colored sapwood visible. The dark richly grained walnut on a portion of the playing surface is from a "crotch" or "forked" section of the tree which is the area under where two branches meet. The flare look of the grain in this section is considered prime wood and is valued by woodworkers for its unique patterns. In the spirit of Kintsugi (the Japanese Art of repairing broken pottery with lacquered resin and powdered gold), a bronze resin was used to bind the natural cracks.

Four tracks with delicate bronze resin accent lines can accommodate two, three or four players. A decorative and functional card slot runs the circumference of the bowl enabling players to see each other's cards over the bowl. Recessed bottom allows for cards to sit under the bowl for storage. Unique bowl design is perfect for a coffee table display and can hold your crib or family game night snacks!

Play requires one revolution around the 120 holes and peg out with 121. Skunk lines are marked in black, and every 5 holes are marked in bronze for easy pegging. The generous size of the bowl also allowed for scoring tracks to be added.

Wood is finished with a food safe butcher block conditioner (mineral oil/beeswax), which can be reapplied as needed and is readily available online and at local stores.

Measures 14 11/16 wide x 4 1/2 high x 2 3/4 bowl depth.

Artist signature and piece detail is on the bottom of the bowl.

Price differences in cribbage bowls reflect the type of wood, size, finish, and time involved with added details.

I'm not a production turner; I do not use automated machinery. Each bowl starts as a locally sourced log, before being roughed out with the chainsaw and bandsaw then receives an initial turn on the lathe. Bowls of this size can take up to two years to dry before being turned again, pouring the resin track, meticulously hand sanding and finishing.

I sand the majority of my pieces to at least 1000 grit and do go up to 3000 grit with some of my darker colored woods. The smooth finish allows you to simply wipe as needed with a dry cloth, chemical cleaners should never be needed in general care.

Bowl will be professionally packaged and insured. Free shipping within the continental US or local pickup available. Please contact me to discuss the price of additional shipping requests or for further details regarding the bowl.
